I think you could easily say that Murray was the greatest commentator that ever lived. My interest in F1 pretty much died when he retired, and it's no coincidence. Just amazing enthusiasm. Never got tired of listening to him!

As far as I'm concerned Murry Walker needs to be called Sir Murray Walker to me as an American citizen I've been looking at Formula 1 since the time I was twenty something years old I'm 62 years old and I've been looking at that Formula since I heard Murry Walker's voice his voice was electrifying he made you get into the mood he made you shout for different people or whoever was leading the race I remember Ayrton Senna leading of race and I forgot who was second but he made it so good and exhilarating you would wouldn't want to leave your TV in my mind he'll always be the voice of Formula 1 and I still look at old videos where he's announcing with Martin brundle and James Hunt the voice of Formula 1 with always be Murry Walker.

Murray Walker truly was a one-of-a-kind person, no one could ever come close to his level of commentary and just being an all-round fantastic person in general who loved and lived life to it's fullest!👍👏

I briefly met Murray when he was a guest at the FIA Rallycross at Lydden Hill a few years ago. It was really exciting to meet a man who was the soundtrack to my lifelong passion for motorsport. He was a perfect gent and you could feel the warmth the crowd had for him. He was even concerned that he didn’t steal the limelight from the other guest, the great Arthur Debenham .His autobiography is a great story of a life lived to the full. For my generation he is the voice of Formula One, Touring Cars and Rallycross etc and of course the Bike fans loved him as well. God bless you Murray 🏁

I went to the Monaco Grand Prix a few times and used to hang around the marina on the Friday where you would bump into all the famous people. I remember standing next to Eddie Jordan's boat (The Snapper) when Murray Walker came rushing past saying "Sorry - no autographs. I have a meeting". He went onto Eddie's boat and about 30 seconds later came back out and rushed off saying "Sorry - the meeting's somewhere else". A big crowd of fans laughed their heads of as Murray went rushing off in the other direction. I have a great photo I took of Murray in the background with a Scotsman in front of him wearing a t-shirt saying "Murray Walker is God" :-)

"Excuse me while I interrupt myself" "I know it's an old cliche, but you can cut the atmosphere with a cricket stump." "This is an interesting circuit, because it has inclines. And not just up, but down as well." "The lead car is absolutely unique, except for the one behind it which is identical." "Unless I am very much mistaken.... I AM very much mistaken!" "Mansell is slowing down, taking it easy. Oh no he isn't IT'S A LAP RECORD." Classic Murray. He was also this good when he covered the British Touring Car series in the 90s too.

If anyone at Sky F1 has any sway with F1 management then suggest that they put Murray’s ‘With half the race gone...’ quote on the boards at Silverstone this year, at the halfway point, in tribute. He had a great sense of humour and it’s an ideal way to honour him.

Will Crofty, Allen and Martin’s voices be revered in this manner? I think for the current generation of fans like me, in 30-40 years time, I hope so. But my heart goes out to not only Mr Walker’s family and friends, but to all the old-school fans too, this sounds like a big loss for all of you. I can understand why, watching clips of old races, I like Murray’s chirpy, energetic voice and his ability to deliver emotive comments during high moments.

@Magnus Tan Martin's always been the co-commentator, the "support role" to Murray, James, Jonathan, and Crofty. Except in 2011, when BBC made Martin lead commentator, and David Coulthard was the co-commentator.

    2. Magnus Tan
      Magnus Tan

@Brendan P I believe James Allen was a more iconic voice. Was Martin the supporting act to Allen, like he is now with Crofty? Or was it the other way around back then?

    3. Brendan P
      Brendan P

I think Martin would be in that elite category already. He's been doing the co-commentary since 1997, that's 24 years. Murray did F1 commentary fulltime for 25 years, and that's not including his appearances before fulltime. Both men have been the soundtrack to F1 for many people over that timespan, and there was something special about Murray and Martin's partnership. They've both provided something extra special to F1 fans worldwide.

Brundle's comments were special here. People all over the world loved Murray, myself included. I couldn't wait to hear Fleetwood Mac and Murray Walker's voice welcoming me to a new race. Brundle captured it exactly. I felt his warmth of personality from thousands of miles away, and I just loved him more in the moments where an error showed he was human, sometimes just out of being carried away in pure excitement. I didn't need him to be technically perfect; James Hunt (great partnership) was always there to wearily step in and correct him anyway. He made the drama and the emotion of the event come to life for a kid who had never had the opportunity to watch from beside a track in his life. He filled in all the parts I couldn't get from the raw broadcast. Thank you, Murray. We never met, but I still felt like I was your friend.
